A delegation from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) made its first-ever official visit to Syria, just days before the first anniversary of Bashar al-Assad’s ousting.

Speaking from Damascus, the rotating head of the UN body, Slovenian ambassador Samuel Zbogar, reaffirmed the UNSC’s “clear support for sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.”

He stressed that the path toward a better future must be led and owned by Syria, with the international community ready to assist.

The delegation met with interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, whose sanctions had recently been lifted.

It held discussions with diverse communities and officials on critical issues, including justice, reconciliation, and reconstruction.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani hailed the visit as a “historic moment” for re-establishing trust between the UN and the country following nearly 14 years of civil war.
