The US State Department has approved a significant military sale to NATO ally Romania, involving the transfer of 32 F-35A fighter jets and related equipment in a deal valued at $7.2 billion.
The proposed sale, which still requires approval from the US Congress, is part of a broader effort to bolster the security of Romania and support US foreign policy and national security objectives. The F-35A aircraft, produced by Lockheed Martin, will enhance Romania’s defense capabilities and contribute to regional stability.
The announcement coincides with the beginning of Ukrainian pilot training in Romania on F-16 fighter jets, which the US has approved for Ukraine to counter Russian aggression. Romania, strategically located at the gateway to Ukraine and the Black Sea, aims to establish itself as a key hub for F-16 training and support.
In November 2023, Romania inaugurated an F-16 training center at its Fetesti air base, with plans to also train Ukrainian pilots. The State Department’s announcement also includes a separate approval for a $4.1 billion sale of a KC-46A aerial refueling tanker to Japan.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently met with Romanian Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu, expressing gratitude for Romania’s support, including the delivery of a Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine.
The F-35 deal reflects growing defence collaboration between the US and Romania.
