Jesse Jackson, a towering figure in the civil rights movement and a key ally of Martin Luther King Jr., has passed away at the age of 84. Jackson died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his loved ones, according to a statement from his family. No cause of death was provided.

The family issued a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Jackson’s immense impact on the fight for justice and equality.

“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape a global movement for freedom and dignity,” the statement reads.

Jackson’s efforts to uplift the marginalised and voiceless, from his campaigns for the U.S. presidency in the 1980s to his tireless voter registration drives, have left an indelible mark on history.

Described as a “tireless change agent,” Jackson’s legacy extended beyond his leadership in politics.

“Our father was a servant leader – not only to our family but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the family continued. They emphasised his belief in justice, equality, and love, which inspired millions and urged people to honour his memory by continuing the fight for these values.

In recent years, Jackson faced health challenges, including a diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy in November 2025 and Parkinson’s disease, which he had lived with since 2017. Despite these physical challenges, Jackson’s spirit remained undiminished.

The family announced that public observances would be held in Chicago, and further details of his celebration of life and other public events will be shared in due course.

Jackson is survived by his wife, Jacqueline, and their five children, along with grandchildren.
