The United States and Denmark plan to renegotiate the 1951 defence agreement covering Greenland, a source familiar with discussions between President Donald Trump and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) chief, Mark Rutte, told AFP on Thursday.

The source said European allies would also increase Arctic security, but added that US sovereignty over bases on Greenland was not part of the talks.

According to the source, the 1951 pact would be reviewed, noting that the agreement, updated in 2004, already allows Washington to expand troop deployments if Danish and Greenlandic authorities are notified in advance.

The US currently maintains the Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland, a key component of its missile defence system.

Trump has announced a framework deal after meeting Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, though details remain unclear.

Rutte indicated that one outcome of the meeting was an agreement to prevent Chinese and Russian access to Greenland’s economy or military facilities.

Meanwhile, Trump’s prior threats regarding Greenland had stirred tensions within NATO and prompted some European nations to call for enhanced Arctic security measures.
