The United States embassy has ended all engagement with the speaker of Poland’s parliament after allegations that he insulted President Donald Trump, the US ambassador said on Thursday.
Ambassador Tom Rose said the move followed what he described as “outrageous and unprovoked” remarks by Speaker Wlodzimierz Czarzasty about the US president.
Writing on X, Rose said Washington would not tolerate actions that damage US–Polish relations or show disrespect to Trump, whom he praised for supporting Poland.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded by urging mutual respect between allies, saying partnership did not involve lecturing one another.
Czarzasty had earlier criticised a joint US–Israeli proposal to back Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, arguing that Trump did not merit the award. He said Poland should focus on strengthening existing alliances such as NATO, the United Nations, and the World Health Organisation, rather than aligning more closely with the Trump administration.
He also condemned Trump’s policies, including tariffs on Europe, comments about Greenland, and criticism of NATO allies’ role in Afghanistan, which he called a breach of international law and shared values.
Despite the ambassador’s reaction, Czarzasty said he stood by his position, stressing that he respected the United States as Poland’s key partner but would not retreat from his views.
Czarzasty leads the New Left party, part of Tusk’s pro-European governing coalition, while Poland is currently governed under President Karol Nawrocki, a strong supporter of Trump.
