The White House confirmed on Tuesday that high-level talks with Iranian officials remain on schedule for later this week, despite a military skirmish in the Arabian Sea.
The diplomatic push continues even after a US F-35C stealth fighter shot down an Iranian drone that “aggressively” approached the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Trump remains committed to a “diplomacy first” approach, though she cautioned that “it takes two to tango.”
These talks, expected to take place in Türkiye, will be led by Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for global conflicts. The meeting marks a critical attempt at engagement amid heightened regional friction.

While pursuing dialogue, the administration is maintaining a firm military stance.
Leavitt emphasised that a “range of options,” including the use of force, remains on the table, noting that the significant US naval presence in the region serves as a clear deterrent.
She pointed to last year’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear programme as evidence of US resolve.
The drone intercept is the latest in a series of maritime provocations that have tested the limits of the proposed diplomatic channel.
US officials indicated that while the invitation for talks stands, the military is prepared to respond to any further threats against American assets in the Arabian Sea.
