US media executive and football club owner Rocco Commisso has died at the age of 76, Italian Serie A side Fiorentina announced on Saturday.

In a statement, the Florence-based club said the Commisso family was mourning the death of its president following a prolonged period of medical treatment, describing the loss as one met with deep pain and sadness.

Commisso, an Italian-born billionaire who emigrated to the United States as a child, was the founder of Mediacom Communications, one of the largest cable television providers in the US. Forbes estimated his net worth at about $5.9 billion.

He acquired Fiorentina in 2019 and became heavily involved in the club’s affairs, investing €120 million in a new training complex and spearheading efforts to revive the club’s past successes from the 1950s and 1960s.

During his tenure, Fiorentina reached three major finals, the Italian Cup in 2023 and the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023 and 2024, but failed to secure a trophy. The club finished sixth in Serie A last season but has struggled this campaign, currently sitting in 18th place.

Commisso previously owned the New York Cosmos, the former club of Brazilian great Pelé, from 2017 to 2025.
