The United States has said it was allowing diplomats to leave Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, because the country’s security was deteriorating.
The State Department disclosed the information in a notice on Wednesday.
“On April 8, 2026, the Department of State authorised non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave U.S. Embassy Abuja due to the deteriorating security situation,” the notice read.

The department said it was authorising “non-emergency US government employees and US government employee family members to leave US embassy Abuja due to the deteriorating security situation.”
The State Department, however, encourages Americans to reconsider going to Nigeria due to risks including kidnappings and other crimes.
