US Police Officer Fatally Shot Outside CDC

A police officer was shot dead on Friday near the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, in an incident that also left the gunman dead, authorities confirmed. No other casualties or injuries were reported, though multiple rounds were fired within the CDC campus area.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said officers responding to the scene found a critically injured DeKalb County police officer, later identified as 33-year-old David Rose, who died from his wounds. Rose, a husband and father of two with a third child on the way, was described by his department as a dedicated officer and devoted family man.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. Police believe he acted alone and was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on the second floor of a nearby CVS pharmacy. Reports from CNN and The New York Times suggested the man’s father had earlier alerted authorities that he was suicidal, and that the suspect may have linked an unspecified illness to the COVID-19 vaccine, though investigators have not confirmed this.

The shooting began shortly before 5:00pm local time (2100 GMT) in an area close to the CDC campus and the pharmacy. Ninety-two children attending a daycare facility on the CDC grounds were evacuated safely and reunited with their families at a nearby school.

CDC director Susan Monarez expressed heartbreak over the attack, praising Officer Rose’s bravery. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also paid tribute to those who serve in law enforcement, asking the public to keep the officer’s family and colleagues in their thoughts.
