More than 17,500 Americans have returned to the United States since US and Israeli military operations against Iran began last weekend, the State Department said on Wednesday.

Assistant Secretary of State Dylan Johnson said more than 8,500 Americans returned on Tuesday alone.

Johnson added that the State Department had assisted nearly 6,500 people, though most Americans left on their own and nearly all travelled via commercial flights.

The U.S. is also arranging charter flights and, in a departure from standard practice, is waiving fees for Americans boarding them.
