US Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced a bill, the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, which seeks to end dual citizenship for American nationals. Currently, US law permits citizens to hold multiple nationalities without renouncing any.
Moreno, who renounced his Colombian citizenship, said dual citizenship creates “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.” He described being an American citizen as “an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing.”
If passed, the legislation could affect high-profile individuals such as First Lady Melania Trump, who holds US and Slovenian citizenship, as well as thousands of dual nationals, including Nigerians.

From 2021 to 2023, 38,890 Nigerians were naturalised in the US, making Nigeria the only African country in the top 20 nations for naturalisations, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Nigerian law allows citizens by birth to retain dual nationality, but Moreno’s proposal would require Americans to renounce any other citizenship to retain US nationality.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to restrict automatic citizenship for US-born children of undocumented immigrants, which is currently stalled due to legal challenges citing the 14th Amendment.
