US Warns of Possible Terror Threat in Nigeria

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and US-affiliated schools in Nigeria.

The alert urges U.S. citizens living in or travelling within the country to adopt heightened security measures and remain vigilant in public spaces.

In the advisory, the embassy stated that it had received information indicating a potential threat to locations associated with the United States. As a precaution, U.S. citizens were advised to take additional care when visiting the US Embassy in Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with American institutions across Nigeria.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the notice stated.

Authorities recommended practical steps to reduce personal risk, including varying travel routes and times, avoiding predictable routines, and maintaining heightened awareness of one’s surroundings. The advisory also urged individuals to keep a low profile and regularly review personal security plans with family members.

“Be aware of your surroundings, keep a low profile, and vary your regular routes,” the embassy advised, adding that travellers should keep their mobile phones charged in case of emergencies and stay alert in public places.

The embassy also warned citizens to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations, which can become potential security risks. Visitors to public buildings were encouraged to familiarise themselves with emergency exits upon entry to improve preparedness during emergencies.

Despite the warning, the consular sections of the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain open and operational. Officials said they would continue monitoring the situation and providing updates through official channels.

The embassy also directed citizens seeking more information on travel risks and security conditions in Nigeria to consult the Nigeria Country Information page on the U.S. Department of State’s travel website.

Security advisories of this nature are typically issued when authorities receive intelligence suggesting potential risks, even if specific details remain limited. Citizens and residents have been encouraged to remain cautious while continuing their normal activities with appropriate safety measures in place.
