An 18-year-old American student who dropped her newborn baby from a Paris hotel window has been placed in psychiatric care, French prosecutors confirmed on Wednesday.

The infant was thrown from the second-floor window of a hotel in the 20th arrondissement of Paris on Monday, according to a prosecution source. Despite emergency treatment, the baby did not survive.

Police were alerted after discovering the newborn wrapped in a cloth, with its umbilical cord still attached, outside the hotel. Investigators determined that the mother had given birth in her hotel room before throwing the child out of the window.

French authorities have launched a murder investigation, but the woman’s placement in psychiatric care raises the possibility that she may be deemed unfit to stand trial. Officials stated she was part of a group of young adults travelling through Europe.
