Canada’s Magdeleine Vallieres won the women’s road race at the cycling world championships in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday, securing her biggest career victory.
The 24-year-old cyclist broke away late on the gruelling 167km course, which involved 11 circuits over the city’s hills.
Vallieres crossed the summit finish alone, completely exhausted, after dropping her two closest competitors on the final cobbled climb of the 15.2km lap. She finished ahead of Niamh Fisher-Black of New Zealand and Mavi Garcia of Spain, who came in second and third, respectively.

The race saw favourite Pauline Ferrand-Prevot heavily marked by rivals, which allowed the small lead group, including Vallieres, to gain a decisive advantage. These are the first cycling world championships ever held in Africa, with the winner earning the coveted rainbow jersey to wear for the following year.
