American tennis player Venus Williams displayed her legendary skill on Tuesday at the Auckland Classic, despite a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 defeat against the 52nd-ranked Magda Linette.

The 45-year-old former world number one forced a deciding set with a strong second-set performance before fatigue set in.

This match marked Williams’ first singles appearance since August and serves as a vital warm-up for her historic Australian Open run.

By accepting a wildcard for the upcoming Grand Slam in Melbourne, Williams is set to become the oldest woman to ever compete in the tournament.

Linette, who secured her first career win over the American great, praised Williams’ movement and shot-making.

Following this performance, Williams will travel to Hobart to continue her preparations for what will be her first Australian Open appearance in five years.
