Scenes of Snowfall in South Africa

The snowfall in Gauteng province was a result of the cold front that arrived in South Africa late last week. This front transformed into a weather system called a “cut-off low.” Although snowfall is not entirely unprecedented in Johannesburg, which sits at an altitude of over 1,700 metres, it remains a rare occurrence. The last instances of snowfall Johannesburg were observed in 2012 and 1996.
