Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 35. The midfielder, who enjoyed a decade-long stint with Arsenal before later playing for Juventus, Nice, and Cardiff, has been without a club since his departure from Mexican side Pumas at the close of 2023.
Ramsey’s decision to retire comes after battling injuries and experiencing limited match time in recent years. His last appearance for Wales came in 2024, where he earned his 86th cap, but he was not called up for their heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a World Cup qualifier last month. That loss effectively ended his hopes of making one final appearance on the world stage.
“It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it. It would not have been possible without the incredible input of all the managers I have played under and all the staff who have helped me in many ways.”

Ramsey also paid tribute to the unwavering support of Wales’ fans: “To the Red Wall (Wales fans). You have been there through thick and thin! You have been there through the highs and lows, and you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together and it’s been an honour to represent you. Diolch (thank you).”
Ramsey’s football journey was marked by notable achievements, including his pivotal role in Wales’ remarkable 2016 European Championship semi-final run, during which he earned a spot in UEFA’s team of the tournament. He also featured in the 2021 Euros and the 2022 World Cup.
Ramsey clinched three FA Cups, a Serie A title, two Italian Cups, a Scottish Cup with Rangers, and two Europa League runners-up medals.
Wales manager Craig Bellamy described him as “one of the best players to ever play for Wales,” praising his influence not only on the pitch but as a role model for younger players. However, Bellamy did not select Ramsey for the recent World Cup qualifier, noting his lack of competitive football and his current clubless situation.
