Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka has announced that the 2026 season will be the final chapter of his career, with the three-time Grand Slam singles champion saying he hopes to bow out on the best possible note.

The Swiss star shared the news in a message posted on social media on Friday, writing that every book needs an ending and that it was time for him to close his career as a professional player.

Wawrinka, who will turn 41 in March, made clear that 2026 would be his last year on the ATP Tour.

Wawrinka enjoyed his greatest successes during an era dominated by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, capturing the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016. Those triumphs cemented his reputation as one of the outstanding competitors of his generation.

Over the course of his career, Wawrinka has claimed 16 ATP titles, although his most recent victory came at the Geneva Open in 2017.

He reached a career-high world ranking of number three in 2014, but has slipped down the standings in recent years after battling persistent injuries and is currently ranked 157th.

Despite those setbacks, Wawrinka’s longevity is reflected in his 582 tour-level wins, the fourth-highest total among active players, trailing only Gaël Monfils, who has also indicated that he plans to retire at the end of next year.

Beyond individual success, Wawrinka has enjoyed notable achievements in team events.

He won Olympic gold in men’s doubles alongside Federer at the 2008 Beijing Games and played a key role in Switzerland’s first Davis Cup triumph in 2014.

Wawrinka is set to begin what will be his final season on tour at the United Cup in Perth, which gets underway on January 2.
