The Peoples Democratic Party has declared that it will not support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

PDP also dismissed a call by Minister Nyesom Wike for its candidates to back the president as a “shameless, self-serving” move by “pretenders in the opposition.”

The party, in a statement on Tuesday by National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong,  said Wike’s message was directed not at “real PDP members” but at those working for the governing All Progressives Congress.

“The true and principled members of the People’s Democratic Party are not part of the shameless, self-serving support for the APC-led Federal Government and its destructive policies,” PDP said.

“The paramount duty of the opposition is to provide an alternative to the incumbent, not to massage their ego.”

The PDP said any alliance between opposition parties should be among themselves and not with the governing party, describing the arrangement championed as a “rainbow coalition” as “the greatest threat to electoral democracy and the fastest way of railroading the country into an electoral monarchy.”

The party urged its members to remain steadfast as it awaits a Court of Appeal judgment in its leadership case. “Our case at the Court of Appeal has been heard, and we await judgment. We know that the entire judiciary is conscious that justice delayed is justice denied,” it said.

The PDP warned Nigerians against “elite accommodation and state capture masquerading as broad-based political collaboration,” saying next year’s election offers an opportunity to vote out “these insensitive and irresponsible political actors.”
