West Bromwich Albion have appointed former Tottenham midfielder and caretaker manager Ryan Mason as their new head coach, signing him to a three-year contract on Monday.

The 33-year-old Mason takes over at the Hawthorns with the key mission of securing West Brom’s return to the Premier League after the club finished ninth in the Championship last season. The team had been without a manager since Tony Mowbray’s departure in April.

“This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fanbase, and I am excited about what we can achieve together,” Mason said in a statement.

Mason’s playing career was cut short by a serious head injury, after which he transitioned into coaching at Tottenham Hotspur in 2018. He stepped in as caretaker manager twice, in 2021 and 2023, following the dismissals of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Most recently, Mason was part of the coaching team under Ange Postecoglou when Spurs lifted the Europa League last month, ending a 17-year trophy drought.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy praised Mason’s contributions: “Ryan has been an integral part of Tottenham Hotspur for a number of years, both as a player and a coach. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan for all his dedication and hard work over the years, and we wish him every success for the future.”
