Nuno Espírito Santo secured his first victory as West Ham United manager on Sunday, guiding his side to a spirited 3–1 comeback win over Newcastle United at the London Stadium.
The result, only West Ham’s second league win of the season, keeps them in the relegation zone but narrows the gap to safety — they now sit just three points behind 17th-placed Burnley, their next opponents.
Newcastle made the brighter start, taking the lead inside four minutes when Jacob Murphy lashed in a precise shot from the edge of the area — just moments after Jarrod Bowen had struck the post at the other end.
West Ham thought they had a quick route back when referee Robert Jones awarded a penalty after Bowen went down under Malick Thiaw’s challenge. However, VAR intervened to overturn the decision, showing that the Newcastle defender had made contact with the ball first.

The home side eventually drew level in the 35th minute through Lucas Paquetá, who rifled a powerful effort from outside the box beyond goalkeeper Nick Pope. Moments before half-time, fortune favoured the Hammers as Sven Botman turned Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s low cross into his own net, handing West Ham a 2–1 lead at the break.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe reacted with three substitutions at half-time, bringing on Fabian Schär, William Osula, and Jacob Ramsey to inject energy into a subdued side. The visitors dominated possession in the second half, pressing West Ham deep into their own half but failing to create clear chances.
At the other end, Pope was forced into two fine saves to deny the hosts a third goal, while West Ham midfielder Freddie Potts saw his effort ruled out for offside midway through the half.
As Newcastle pushed forward in search of an equaliser, gaps opened up at the back, and Tomas Souček sealed the win in the closing stages with a composed finish, ensuring Nuno’s first triumph since taking charge in late September — just two weeks after his dismissal by Nottingham Forest.
The result ended West Ham’s long wait for a home league win, their first at the London Stadium since February. Newcastle, meanwhile, slipped to 13th in the Premier League table after another frustrating afternoon in the capital.
