The Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), Cindy McCain, has stated that there is no evidence to support Israel’s claims that Hamas is stealing humanitarian aid in Gaza.
Speaking to CBS News, McCain clarified: “People are rushing to the aid trucks, and this isn’t about Hamas or organised crime.” Her comments come as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate, with approximately 500,000 people now facing severe food insecurity.
Despite these challenges, McCain confirmed that the WFP remains committed to delivering food and keeping bakeries operational across the enclave. However, she issued a stark warning about the urgent need for access, stressing that the agency’s efforts are being severely hampered.
“We can’t do our job unless the international community applies pressure on Israel,” she said, highlighting the complete blockage of aid routes and warning that any further delay could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
Since March 2, Israeli authorities have maintained a total blockade on all crossings into Gaza for humanitarian, medical, and commercial deliveries. This has drastically worsened living conditions for civilians.
Israel, with backing from the United States, has waged a military bombardment in Gaza since October 2023. According to Palestinian health officials, the invasion and airstrikes have resulted in more than 173,000 people killed or injured, the majority of them women and children. Over 11,000 individuals are still unaccounted for.
