The World Health Organisation (WHO) General Assembly has voted to allow the flag of the State of Palestine to be flown at its headquarters in Geneva, marking a symbolic but notable gesture of support.
According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the resolution was backed by 95 member states. Four countries opposed the move — Israel, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Germany — while 27 others, including the United States, abstained. The US is currently in the process of withdrawing from the WHO.
Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ibrahim Khraishi, addressed the General Assembly by describing the decision as “symbolic,” yet significant. “It is just one step, but it proves that we are part of the international community contributing to global health issues,” he said.
Khraishi also expressed optimism that Palestine would soon obtain full membership in the WHO and other United Nations bodies.
Wafa described the resolution as a “significant step forward” for Palestine, enabling it to strengthen international cooperation during health emergencies and access global mechanisms for the provision of healthcare to its population.
This development came shortly after the 78th World Health Assembly, where WHO member states voted in favour of continuing to report on the severe health situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan. That motion passed with 104 votes in favour and four against.
