The Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, has said Governor Ademola Adeleke delayed his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party until after the PDP convention in Ibadan concluded.
In an interview with Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Alimi explained that Adeleke resigned from the PDP on November 4 and had joined Accord by November 6, but postponed the public announcement to avoid being seen as disrupting the PDP event. The commissioner added that the governor left the party due to an escalating national leadership crisis.
Adeleke officially joined Accord on Tuesday, weeks after leaving the PDP, under which he was elected governor of Osun State. In his resignation letter to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, Adeleke cited the ongoing leadership dispute as his reason for leaving.

The PDP has been divided into two leadership factions at the national level, with one group, backed by Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, holding the Ibadan convention despite conflicting court rulings on the exercise. Many had hoped the convention would resolve the party’s crisis, but the situation worsened instead.
Alimi noted that the leadership turmoil prompted Adeleke to seek a platform aligning with his governance agenda, which Accord offers. He said the governor’s move has been widely welcomed and praised since the unveiling.
Despite the switch, Adeleke remains committed to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, with Alimi stressing that backing the president has always been a priority, even during their time in the PDP.
