Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has announced his support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming Abuja Area Council elections scheduled for February 2026.
He particularly endorsed the re-election bid of Christopher Maikalangu, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairman, who recently switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Speaking at the launch of a 7-kilometre road project with four bridges connecting Tunga Madaki to surrounding communities, Wike urged residents to back the ruling party.
He stressed that the project, part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, was a direct response to the people’s longstanding demands for infrastructure.
The minister explained that the road construction was tied to negotiations during the acquisition of land for a second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Communities had agreed to release their ancestral land on the condition that the government would provide road access.
According to Wike, President Tinubu directed that their requests be granted, leading to the present project, which is scheduled for completion and commissioning in June 2026.
Wike praised the project contractor, the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), for committing to the timeline.
He further credited Maikalangu for persistently reminding the FCT administration of its promise, urging the people to support him in the upcoming elections.
In his remarks, Wike directly linked development to electoral choice, reminding residents that past administrations had neglected their communities.
He argued that the APC-led government had shown it was willing to fulfil its promises and deserved political backing.
The minister emphasised that once completed, the road would not only connect the communities to the airport through Bill Clinton Drive but would also accelerate broader development in the area.
His call to voters was clear: reward the APC with their support in recognition of the government’s investment in their future.
As campaigns gather momentum, Wike’s endorsement is seen as a significant boost to the APC’s grassroots mobilisation in the Federal Capital Territory, with February’s elections expected to serve as a key test of the ruling party’s influence in Abuja.
