Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has questioned how Rotimi Amaechi could claim he was unable to afford his mother’s medication when friends with private jets attended her burial, saying the former minister never asked for help.

Wike made the statement on Saturday while visiting the Uzugbani Ekpeye National Executive Council at Ekpeye House in Ahoada, Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State.

“Yet, you didn’t know that you had friends who had private jets who would come down to bury your mother, whom you could not buy drugs for, for her to survive,” Wike said.

“You didn’t tell them my mother was sick. Can you help me? Give me money; let me buy drugs.”

He also asked, “Maybe they refused to give you money, and then they now came to bury your mother, yet you accepted them.”

Wike questioned how Amaechi could claim financial difficulty given his political career and assets.

“He said it was Tinubu that killed his mother. It was Tinubu’s administration that led him not to be able to buy drugs for his mother,” Wike said.

“This was a speaker for eight years, from 1999 to 2007. This was a governor for eight years, from 2007 to 2015. This was a minister for eight years, from 2015 to 2023.”

He added, “And your mother was sick. And you are telling the whole world that because of the policy of Tinubu, you couldn’t buy drugs for your mother. And so your mother died.”

Wike also referenced Amaechi’s wife: “You have told the world that your wife is an industrialist. Yet, your industrialist couldn’t give you money to buy drugs for your mother.”

Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, said in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday that his mother died because rising drug costs under Tinubu’s administration made it difficult for his family to care for her.

His mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Amaechi, died in July 2026 at the age of 89 and was buried on September 5, 2026, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
