Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has attributed recent infrastructural progress in Abuja to the leadership style of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike highlighted key upgrades, including the renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC), as evidence of a revived focus on urban renewal in the FCT.
“I’ve always said that our problem is leadership. When you have the right leadership, everything works out well,” Wike stated, stressing how Tinubu’s intervention led to long-overdue action on neglected national assets.
Wike recalled how the dilapidated state of the ICC shocked President Tinubu during a visit for the ECOWAS Parliament inauguration last year:
“It was an eyesore. It was horrible… And he couldn’t believe it, that this is the International Conference Centre, the only one Nigeria has. And he said, look, this is unacceptable.”
“Mr Minister sir, I don’t want to see this again… That’s what he said, leadership is key.”
Wike confirmed that the centre has now been fully renovated, calling it a “transformation that will make you feel happy.”
He also announced the upcoming inauguration of several infrastructure projects in Abuja, including: The Gishiri Interchange by CGC, Roads leading to the new Court of Appeal Abuja division and the Completion of camp facilities for FCT workers.
Wike clarified that although some of these inaugurations are part of activities marking Tinubu’s second year in office on May 29, the events would extend into early June:
“So there are a line of activities that will even take you to June 5th, June 7th, June 8th… I will not say everything will be done before May 29th.”
The minister’s remarks underscored the administration’s strategy of milestone-based governance tied to visible, timely infrastructure delivery.
