An offer from Wolves forward Matheus Cunha to purchase new glasses for a security guard after a post-match altercation led an independent disciplinary panel to reduce his suspension from three matches to two.
The Brazilian received a two-match ban after clashing with Ipswich’s security staff members following his team’s 2-1 defeat against their relegation rivals at Molineux on December 14.
According to the panel’s report, Cunha elbowed a man and “knocked his glasses from his face, causing them to break.”
The report stated that the “starting point” should be a three-match suspension to reflect the seriousness of the offence.
However, it noted: “The commission agreed that Cunha’s acceptance of the charge, his prompt personal apology, the offer to cover the cost of new glasses, and his clean disciplinary history, were mitigating factors.”
These factors also decreased the fine, lowering it from £120,000 to £80,000.
Cunha has been one of the standout performers for Wolves this season, netting 10 goals in 19 league appearances.
The loss to Ipswich signalled the end of the tenure of Wolves manager Gary O’Neil, who was fired and succeeded by Portuguese coach Vitor Pereira.
Wolves sit one place above the relegation zone, ahead of Ipswich on goal difference.
