Woman Acquitted of Co-Wife Murder

A Kano State High Court on Friday acquitted Fatima Dahiru, who had faced prosecution over the alleged murder of her co-wife, Wasila Yunusa, in Farawa, Kumbotso Local Government Area.

Fatima had been charged with a single count of culpable homicide in connection with the case.

During proceedings, prosecution counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki told the court that the incident occurred on 6 February 2019 around 3:30 p.m., when Fatima allegedly struck Wasila on the head with a sharp object, causing her death. The prosecution called seven witnesses, including the deceased’s husband, Isyaku Muhammad.

In her judgment, Justice Zuwaira Yusuf ruled that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt, describing the evidence as weak and contradictory.

“None of the prosecution witnesses were eyewitnesses to the murder, and no credible evidence was presented to show how the defendant allegedly killed the deceased,” the judge stated.

Justice Yusuf concluded that suspicion alone could not justify a conviction. “The prosecution failed to establish the offence. The defendant, Fatima Dahiru, is hereby found not guilty of the one-count charge of culpable homicide and is discharged and acquitted,” she ruled.
