President Donald Trump said the world would not be safe unless the United States controls Greenland, according to comments published Monday, as tensions grew between Washington and European allies over trade threats and the Arctic island.

Trump has repeatedly said the United States needs Greenland for national security and has warned it could take control of the territory “one way or the other.”

Meanwhile, many European leaders have strongly pushed back against Trump’s threat. Germany and France on Monday criticised Trump’s weekend threat to impose new tariffs on countries opposing his plans for Greenland, calling the move blackmail.

They said Europe was preparing possible countermeasures, though US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that any retaliation would be “very unwise”.

The European Union said it will hold an emergency summit on Thursday to consider its response. EU officials said their priority was to engage in dialogue but added that the bloc was ready to act if necessary.

Greenland’s government said the tariff threats would not affect its position. Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said the territory would not be pressured and stressed Greenland “is a democratic society with the right to make its own decisions”.

The US president also said in the letter that he no longer felt obliged to think “purely of peace” after failing to win a Nobel Peace Prize, comments contained in a message sent to Jonas Gahr Store, the Prime Minister of Norway, and confirmed by his office.

Trump said peace would remain important but that he could now focus on what he believed was best for the United States.

“Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents; it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we also had boats landing there. ”

“I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The world is not secure unless we have complete and total control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT”. Trump wrote.

Store said the message followed opposition he and Finnish President Alexander Stubb had expressed to Trump over the tariff threats, adding that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the Norwegian government.
