A large part of Dresden’s old town was evacuated on Wednesday after a 250-kilogram unexploded World War II bomb was discovered.

The British-made ordnance was found during demolition work on the collapsed Carola Bridge.

Around 17,000 residents were asked to leave their homes, including those in the area of the historic Frauenkirche church and several hotels.

The Carola Bridge, a major crossing over the Elbe River, partially collapsed in September 2024 and is scheduled to be fully demolished by October.

This discovery is the latest in a series of similar finds across Germany, which remains scattered with unexploded bombs from the war.

Earlier in June, over 20,000 people were evacuated in central Cologne after three World War II bombs were found. That operation was the largest in Cologne since the war’s end and required the evacuation of a hospital, schools, and homes.
