Young Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal was given the club’s iconic number 10 jersey, once held by legendary Lionel Messi, on Wednesday.

“Our 10,” Barcelona said on their social media, sharing a video of Yamal.

The 18-year-old winger, frequently likened to the Argentine icon who also progressed through the club’s La Masia youth academy, was instrumental in helping the Catalan side achieve a domestic treble last season.

Yamal has scored 25 goals for the team in over 100 matches, making his debut in 2023 at just 15 years old while wearing the number 41 shirt.

After spending last season with the number 27, Yamal took on the number 19 last summer, which Messi wore at the club from 2005 to 2008.

Ansu Fati inherited Messi’s number 10 in 2021 after the now Inter Miami player departed for Paris Saint-Germain. Fati struggled with injuries that hindered his potential at Barcelona and recently signed on loan with Monaco in early July.

Other legendary players such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho, and Rivaldo have also worn the prestigious Barcelona number 10 jersey throughout history.

Yamal caught media attention after he celebrated his 18th birthday last weekend with a private event featuring hired entertainers with dwarfism.

Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has requested that the public prosecutor investigate the party following a complaint from the Association for People with Achondroplasia and Other Skeletal Dysplasias (ADEE).
