Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the North-Western state.
The development was confirmed on Monday in a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, elders and supporters across Zamfara.
According to the statement, the governor’s move came after what Anka described as broad engagements with key political stakeholders within the state.
Anka explained that Lawal’s defection was taken after what he called “careful consideration” and in what the governor believes is the best interest of the state’s stability and development.
“After careful consideration, and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawa has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress,” he said, linking the decision to internal tensions within the PDP.

He added that the governor believes aligning with the APC could improve cooperation with the national administration and help address pressing security and development challenges in the state.
“It has become necessary for the governor to align with a political platform that provides greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the government for the benefit of the people,” the statement noted.
Anka further disclosed that the final decision followed a meeting at the Government House in Gusau involving senior officials and political stakeholders, coordinated by the deputy governor. The governor also expressed appreciation to members of the PDP for their support over the years, acknowledging that the prevailing political circumstances had necessitated the transition.
With the move, the number of APC governors across Nigeria has increased to 31. Lawal is also among the governors expected to seek re-election in the 2027 general elections, making his political realignment a development likely to shape future electoral calculations in the state.
