In the biggest upset of the T20 World Cup so far, Zimbabwe defeated Australia by 23 runs in a thrilling encounter at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Chasing 170 for victory, Australia were bundled out for just 146, as Zimbabwe dominated the match from the start.

Zimbabwe, ranked 11th, posted a formidable 169-2 in their 20 overs, with Brian Bennett leading the charge. The 22-year-old opener played a masterclass in controlled aggression, remaining unbeaten on 64 off 56 balls. His innings included seven boundaries, and he formed a record-breaking partnership of 70 with Ryan Burl for the second wicket. Earlier, Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani had put on 61 for the first wicket, ensuring a solid foundation for Zimbabwe.

In response, Australia found itself in deep trouble early. The Zimbabwean opening bowlers, Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans, tore through Australia’s top order, reducing them to a shocking 29-4. Muzarabani, in particular, was exceptional, finishing with figures of 4-17. Despite a brave effort from Glenn Maxwell and Matt Renshaw, who added 77 for the fifth wicket, Australia’s chances evaporated when Maxwell was dismissed for 31 by part-time leg-spinner Ryan Burl.

From 106-4, Australia’s resistance crumbled, and they were eventually all out for 146, falling short by 23 runs. This defeat leaves Australia facing an uphill battle to advance in the tournament, especially without key players like captain Mitchell Marsh and fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

In contrast, Zimbabwe’s fans were jubilant as they celebrated the historic win with a traditional dance. This victory has not only boosted Zimbabwe’s hopes in Group B but has also cast a shadow of uncertainty over Australia’s campaign, with more matches to come against Sri Lanka and Oman.
