Zimbabwe to Investigate Gold-Smuggling Allegations

The government of Zimbabwe has broken the silence around allegations of gold-smuggling and money laundering exposed in an Al-Jazeera documentary last month, saying on Tuesday that it will launch an inquiry into the claims.

The government, therefore, directed relevant bodies to commence investigations into the allegations in the report.

Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa made this information known at a media briefing.

“Any person found to have engaged in acts of corruption, fraud or any form of crime, will face the full wrath of the law.” Monica Mutsvangwa stated.

According to “Gold Mafia,” a four-part investigation by Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera, cartels backed by government officials use Zimbabwe’s gold exports to launder money.

“Gold Mafia” shows gold dealers licensed by Zimbabwean authorities offering undercover reporters posing as foreign criminals to launder money through the sale of Zimbabwe’s gold abroad.

The landlocked southern African country boasts vast gold reserves.
