South African police are investigating serious allegations that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a member of parliament for her father Jacob Zuma’s MK party, was involved in recruiting South African men to fight as mercenaries for Russian forces in the war in Ukraine.

The investigation was initiated after one of Zuma-Sambudla’s sisters filed an affidavit claiming that Zuma-Sambudla and two others recruited 17 men.

These men were allegedly “lured to Russia under false pretences” with promises of lucrative employment. Still, they were then handed over to a Russian mercenary group to fight in the war-torn Donbas region without their knowledge or consent.

Earlier in November, the South African presidency confirmed it had been asked to help rescue the 17 men who were reportedly “trapped” in Ukraine.

The case has been handed to a specialised police unit that investigates crimes against the state.

South African law prohibits citizens from joining foreign armies unless they have received government authorisation.
