Pyramids FC defender Ali Gabr came back to haunt his former club Zamalek after scoring the winner in a 1-0 win on Tuesday to fire his team to the top of the Egyptian Premier League table.

Gabr planted a powerful header past Zamalek goalkeeper Mahmoud Genesh in the 24th minute from a corner. It could have been worse for Zamalek. Five minutes later, Pyramids were awarded a penalty kick after Hamdi Nagguez scuffled with Gabr inside the box. Syrian international Omar Khrbin failed to score from the spot as his Panenka attempt was saved by Genesh.

The win toppled Zamalek from the summit and could prove crucial in Pyramids quest for their first ever league title after being founded last year and heavily funded by controversial Saudi owner Turki Al Sheikh.

Pyramids FC, who beat Cairo giants Al Ahly 1-0 last Thursday, now have 63 points, three ahead of Zamalek and five ahead of defending champions Ahly, having played two more matches than both of their rivals.
