Armed youths stormed South Sudan’s central town of Rumbek early Friday, triggering intense inter-communal clashes that killed at least 71 people, including four soldiers.

Witnesses reported that attackers briefly seized control of parts of the town before military and police reinforcements forced them to withdraw to the city outskirts.

South Sudan’s interim ministry of information confirmed that security forces restored order and arrested four armed civilians following the assault.

The caretaker administration—established after President Salva Kiir dissolved the government ahead of December elections—strongly condemned the violence and urged local communities to exercise restraint as troops secure the area.

This latest outbreak underscores severe instability across the world’s youngest nation, which faces systemic corruption and political uncertainty.

Inter-communal violence has escalated across South Sudan this year, following similar clashes that killed nearly 170 people in the north in March and dozens more in the disputed Abyei region in September.
