The Malawian Government has revealed that 980 Malawian nationals have been moved from a holding facility in Gauteng Province, South Africa, in preparation for their return, and are expected to arrive in the country on Saturday.
In a statement, the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: “The Government of the Republic of South Africa, through the Department of Home Affairs, on Thursday, 11th June, 2026, dispatched 14 buses carrying 980 Malawian nationals who were being held at the Lindela Holding Facility, in Gauteng Province, South Africa.”

The ministry noted that the group is expected to enter Malawi through the Mwanza Border Post on Saturday.

It added that “the repatriated Malawian nationals are expected to enter Malawi through the Mwanza Border Post on Saturday, 13th June, 2026, where they will undergo the necessary security and immigration clearances before proceeding to their respective destinations.”
According to the Ministry, the Malawian Government is working with South African authorities and diplomatic missions across the region to ensure coordination and safety during the process.
Reaffirming its position, it said it “remains committed to safeguarding the welfare and interests of Malawians abroad and will continue to provide updates on the situation as it develops.”
Malawi joins the growing list of African countries evacuating their nationals from South Africa following violent anti-migrant attacks on foreigners, especially blacks, in the country.
