Sudan’s Transition Talks Address Forming United Sudanese Army

Sudan’s military and civilian political leaders have started talks in Khartoum to bring the government-backed militia, the RSF, under army control to form a united Sudanese army.

This, along with putting the military under civilian control, were important demands of the civilian groups that assisted in the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.

The talks on Sunday were part of a December agreement intended to pave the way for a return to democratic rule, which is set to be officially adopted in less than two weeks.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the army commander who took power in a coup two years ago, said he wanted to end the armed forces’ support for dictatorial governments in Sudan.
