Algerian President Tebboune Embarks on State Visit to Portugal

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune initiated a two-day state visit to Portugal on Tuesday (23rd May). During his stay, the African leader will engage in several activities, including meeting Algerian residents, participating in a business forum, and holding discussions with the Portuguese Prime Minister.

Accompanying President Tebboune is a delegation comprising the Algerian ministers of Industry, Commerce, and Start-ups, as well as SMEs.

In the previous week, Portugal’s Finance minister expressed his country’s aim to quintuple investments in Algeria.

President Tebboune and his counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will also address bilateral matters along with regional and international developments.

The visit by President Tebboune follows a significant ministerial summit between Portugal and Morocco.

Over the past few years, Morocco has achieved diplomatic gains as both Portugal and Spain have shifted their historical stances to support Rabbat’s plan regarding the status of Western Sahara.

Algeria remains a staunch supporter of an alternative solution put forth by the Polisario Front.
