Venancio Mondlane, leader of Mozambique’s opposition party, has threatened nationwide chaos and disorder if the Constitutional Council validates results from the October 9 presidential election, which he claims were rigged.
The electoral commission announced ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo as the winner with nearly 71% of the vote, but Mondlane insists he secured 53%, accusing authorities of falsifying results.
“If we get the electoral truth, we will go towards peace. If it is an electoral lie, we will bring the country down to a precipice, chaos and disorder,” Mondlane declared, urging supporters to paralyse the nation starting next Monday.
Unrest has already claimed 130 lives, with international observers citing election irregularities. Rights groups have accused the government of excessive force against protesters.
