Remo Stars continued their impressive Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign with a 2-1 victory over Sunshine Stars in the South West derby at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Saturday.
The hosts took an early lead in the 6th minute when Alex Oyowah headed in a brilliant cross from Sikiru Alimi. They doubled their advantage soon after, as Ibrahim Abubakar cleverly chipped the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Sunshine Stars fought back, with Matthew Samuel pulling a goal back in the 67th minute, giving the visitors hope of a comeback. However, Remo Stars’ defence held firm, ensuring they claimed all three points as the final whistle blew.
This victory marked Daniel Ogunmodede’s side’s fourth away win of the season, further cementing their position at the top of the NPFL table. Remo Stars now lead the standings with 45 points from 22 matches.
On the other hand, Sunshine Stars remain 15th on the table with 24 points from 22 games, as they continue their battle to move away from the relegation zone.
Following the match, Remo Stars head coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, praised his team’s defensive discipline, highlighting their ability to maintain composure and see out the victory despite late pressure from Sunshine Stars.
With momentum on their side, Remo Stars will now focus on maintaining their title charge as they continue their NPFL campaign.
