According to US officials, the deadly fentanyl trade kills tens of thousands of people annually. The White House stated that its tariffs are intended to pressure China to take further action to stop this trade.

“Not going to allow China to continue to source and distribute deadly fentanyl into our country,” American President Donald Trump declared, according to the White House.

Beijing defended its zero-tolerance drug policies on Wednesday and denied any responsibility for the fentanyl pandemic.

“China has one of the toughest policies against drugs in the world,” added Lin.

“Fentanyl is the United States’ issue, and its root cause lies within the United States itself,” he said.
