The Kremlin stated on Wednesday that it was still awaiting official confirmation that the parameters of a historic minerals deal between the US and Ukraine had been agreed upon.
President Donald Trump of the United States had asked that Ukraine return its strategic minerals to make up for the billions of dollars in military and other aid that Joe Biden had given it.
According to a senior Ukrainian source who spoke to AFP late Tuesday, Kyiv had agreed on the deal’s framework, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky might sign it in Washington on Friday.
“Official pronouncements on the matter have not yet been made. Only that Zelensky appeared to be travelling to Washington on Friday, according to what we have received,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“There will probably be attempts to make this visit somewhat substantive,” he stated.
Amidst a verbal spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine believes the agreement would mend strained ties with the Trump administration.
According to a senior Ukrainian official, Kyiv also needs security guarantees, even though the current form of the agreement does not impose any particular security obligations on the US.
Additionally, Moscow has bragged about the potential for US investment in key resources located in Russia and in areas of Ukraine that are occupied by Russian forces.
