The European Union responded sharply on Wednesday to US President Donald Trump’s comments, stating that the EU has been a boon for the United States.

Trump had previously claimed that the European Union was created “to screw” the US—a remark that sparked backlash from EU officials.

A source within the European Commission highlighted that the EU is the world’s largest free market and has significantly benefited the US.

Trump Claims the European Union Was Created to ‘Screw’ the US

The EU pointed out that its single market has facilitated trade, lowered costs for US exporters, and harmonised standards across 27 member states.

The Commission further emphasised that both the US and EU should collaborate to preserve these economic opportunities rather than work against one another.

Trump had earlier threatened to impose 25% tariffs on European imports, escalating tensions between the two sides.

The threat follows a contentious meeting in Munich, where US Vice President JD Vance criticised European policies on issues such as immigration and free speech.
