Nigeria’s Super Falcons have maintained their position in the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday, confirming them as Africa’s leading women’s football team and 36th in the world.
Their ranking has remained unaffected by the lack of activity since December, while their African competitors have seen some declines in their standings.
Current WAFCON champions South Africa hold the second position in Africa, yet are 18 spots behind Nigeria worldwide, having fallen four places to 54th in the global rankings.
Morocco ranks third on the continent, occupying the 60th position globally, while Zambia has dropped two spots to 64th, maintaining its status as the fourth-best team in Africa.
These latest rankings emerged a few months before the 2024 WAFCON tournament scheduled for July 25 to 26 in Morocco.

In the upcoming championship, the Super Falcons will strive for their tenth title after finishing fourth in the previous edition held in 2022.
On the global stage, the United States continues to top the rankings, with the reigning world champions, Spain, in second place.
Germany and England keep their third and fourth positions, respectively, while Japan has risen to fifth, causing Sweden to drop to sixth place.
Additionally, Kenya has made significant progress on the continent, rising seven places to 142nd, whereas Tunisia has experienced the most significant drop, falling 11 to 89th after losing 43.79 points. Djibouti has achieved its highest ranking ever, moving up to 195th place.
The next FIFA women’s world ranking is set to be released on June 12, with the Super Falcons aiming to improve their position ahead of the eagerly awaited WAFCON tournament.
