The Osun State Police Command has released Senator Francis Fadahunsi about two hours after he honoured its invitation over alleged inflammatory remarks.
Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District and is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly incited violence on Tuesday by urging his supporters to “kill” members of the Accord Party.
His remarks caused outrage among politicians and civil society organisations, prompting calls for an apology and an investigation.
The senator honoured the police invitation on Wednesday and was taken to an investigation room at a separate building away from the office of the Commissioner of Police.
He spent nearly two hours being questioned by security personnel before he was taken to the commissioner’s office, where he spent another 20 minutes.
Fadahunsi was subsequently returned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) before his release.
Addressing journalists after his release, the senator said he honoured the police invitation and clarified the statement attributed to him.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing into the alleged inciting comment.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, disclosed this at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo while speaking with journalists.
Iniedu said the police would not tolerate any statement or action capable of disrupting the peace of Osun State before, during or after the August 15 governorship election.
