Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised Patrick Dorgu’s honesty after the Danish full-back convinced the referee to overturn a penalty decision in their 4-1 Europa League win over Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The match saw United awarded three penalties, two of which were converted by Bruno Fernandes to cancel out Mikel Oyarzabal’s early goal. The third penalty came when Dorgu went down in the area, but he reportedly told referee Benoit Bastien that it wasn’t a foul, leading to the decision being reversed without VAR consultation.

Amorim expressed pride in Dorgu’s sportsmanship but admitted that his reaction might differ if the scoreline were different. “It’s the right thing to do, quite proud of him, but if we were losing, I don’t know if I’d have the same response,” he said.

Dorgu, who joined from Lecce in January, had an impressive performance, also winning United’s second penalty and contributing to Jon Aramburu’s red card for a foul on him.

Despite the penalty drama, Fernandes was once again the standout player, completing his hat-trick to take his season total to 15 goals. Amorim lauded Fernandes for his leadership, describing him as the “perfect captain” and urging his team to support him in winning titles.

United will face Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals.
