Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shelled Omdurman, the twin city of the capital Khartoum, killing six civilians, including two children, a medical source reported on Monday.
The attack, which took place on Sunday, also left 36 civilians wounded—half of them children—according to a doctor who spoke to AFP anonymously due to security concerns. The Khartoum regional government’s media office said the bombardment targeted residential areas in northern Omdurman, striking people inside their homes and children playing on a football field.
The ongoing war between the RSF and Sudan’s army, which began in April 2023, has intensified in the capital this year. After initially losing territory to the RSF, the army has recently regained ground and now claims its forces are positioned less than a kilometre from the presidential palace, which the RSF seized at the start of the conflict.
The war has caused widespread devastation, killing tens of thousands and displacing over 12 million people, making it the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis. In Khartoum alone, at least 3.5 million residents have been forced to flee.
Sudan is now deeply divided, with the RSF controlling much of Darfur in the west and parts of the south, while the army maintains dominance in the north and east. Recent military advances in central Sudan and Khartoum have further escalated the battle for control of the capital.
